Implant-Supported Overdentures: A Secure, Removable Option in London, Ontario

Considering Dentures That Feel More Secure?
If you wear dentures — or are thinking about getting them — you may worry about them slipping or feeling uncomfortable. At Sifton Bog Dental in London, Ontario, we offer implant-supported overdentures — a more stable, comfortable solution for missing teeth.
What Are Implant-Supported Overdentures?
Implant-supported overdentures are special dentures that snap onto dental implants placed in your jaw. They’re still removable, but they stay in place much better than traditional dentures because they’re secured by implants, not just sitting on your gums.
These dentures:
- Feel more secure when talking or eating
- Are easier to chew with
- Help prevent bone loss in the jaw
- Can improve overall comfort and confidence
How They Work
- Small implants (usually 2 to 4) are placed in your jawbone.
- Your custom denture is made to fit over those implants.
- The denture “clicks” into place using small connectors, but can be removed daily for cleaning.
Who Might Be a Good Candidate?
You may be a good fit if:
- You are missing most or all of your teeth
- You’ve had trouble with loose or uncomfortable dentures
- You’re in good general health and have enough bone in your jaw (we can check this with imaging)
We’ll do a full exam and take a 3D scan to help you decide if this treatment is right for you.
What Are the Benefits?
Many patients notice:
- Less movement when eating or speaking
- Improved chewing and confidence with food
- Better fit over time, since implants help support the jaw
- A more natural feel compared to regular dentures
(Just keep in mind that results vary from person to person, and regular check-ups are still needed.)
How Many Implants Will I Need?
That depends on your case. For lower dentures, two implants are often enough. For upper dentures, more implants may be needed for better support. Your dentist will explain everything after a full exam and scan.
How Do I Take Care of Them?
- You’ll remove the denture every day to clean it.
- We’ll check the implants and denture parts at your regular appointments — usually every 6 months.
- Some parts may wear over time and need to be replaced (like the clips or attachments).
What Should I Know About Risks?
Every dental treatment has some risks. With implant-supported dentures, these may include:
- Surgery to place the implants
- Healing time
- The need for enough bone to support the implants
- Maintenance costs (some parts may wear out)
We’ll explain everything, including pros and cons, so you can make an informed choice that’s right for you.
What About Insurance and the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
As of the February 2025 update, the CDCP covers exams, cleanings, fillings, and removable dentures — but does not cover dental implants. If you have private insurance, coverage may vary. Before starting any treatment, we’ll give you a full written estimate and go over your options.
