High fluoridated toothpaste – a great tool in decay prevention( consult with your dentist before using it).

A toothpaste with a high concentration of fluoride is becoming more popular in the prevention of cavities. A fluoride paste with a slightly increased level of fluoride ( below 2,800ppm as in Duraphat) could be used in young patients older than 10 If the concentration exceeds 5000 ppm ( for example, PREVIDENT 5000 BOOSTER plus from Colgate or Clinpro from 3M) it is safe to use in kids older than 16.

Your dentist would usually consider a high fluoridated toothpaste in these cases:

  • previous experience of multiple cavities in your teeth;
  • lack of saliva because of adverse effects of the medications (blood pressure medications, medications for seizures, marijuana, other);
  • radiation treatment in the area of the head which reduces the amount of saliva;
  • exposed roots of your teeth due to gum diseases;
  • reduced ability to brush teeth properly in patients with arthritis, neural system issues( Parkinson disease, Altheimer disease) and other health issues.

High fluoridated toothpaste could be used as a part of the caries preventive program. It could be just a few months or a much longer period of time. It depends on the risk factors of decay. If there is no chance to eliminate or reduce risk, the patient would benefit from using it daily on for a long period of time. Although patients using a high fluoride toothpaste are advised to “spit don’t swallow” and not to drink for 30 minutes after brushing, it should be used carefully. It is not recommended to swallow toothpaste with a high level of fluoride.
